Layers of Possibility: A Six-Week Gelli Printing Journey (In-Person)

6 Wednesdays
9:30AM - 12:30PM
$480.00

Instructor: Jennifer Caloyeras

Are you gelli plate curious? A gelli plate is a soft, reusable printing plate made from a flexible gel material and mineral oil. This course introduces students to the gelli plate, a versatile monoprinting technique that can be used to create beautiful works of art, and unlike traditional printmaking, each print is unique.

In this course, students get to know the gelli plate through a series of instructor-led exercises that include paint application, brayering techniques, layering, stencil and mask creation, and mark-making approaches. Students then move on to more complex techniques, including utilizing organic materials on the plate, image transfer techniques (using magazines as well as personal photographs), and collage and composition strategies. Through these exercises, students work in a way that reflects their own desired aesthetic and receive guidance if they’d prefer a more prescribed method.

Emphasis in this class is placed on process, experimentation, and problem-solving. Through guided demonstration followed by practical application, students leave this course with a general understanding of the many ways in which a gelli plate can be used, as well as the practical steps in which to use it and properly care for it. Students also leave the class with a series of beautiful prints.

Please note: if you have taken a previous version of this class, the instructor will be including a variety of new exercises each week, and the last three weeks of class are brand new topics.
