Animals capture our hearts in a way few subjects can. In this course, students learn how to draw animals and create realistic pet portraits using charcoal and colored pencils while exploring the unique personality, expression, and character of their subject.
Working from photographs, students develop observational drawing skills and learn techniques for accurately capturing proportion, structure, texture, value, and color. Through guided demonstrations and individualized feedback, students explore the formal elements of art—including line, shape, space, value, form, texture, and color—to create expressive and lifelike drawings.
The course emphasizes learning how to see and interpret the details that make each animal unique, from the softness of fur and feathers to subtle expressions and body language. Whether creating a portrait of a beloved pet or a favorite animal, students build both technical skills and confidence in a supportive and engaging environment.
This course is ideal for beginners and experienced artists alike. No previous experience is necessary.
