Botanical illustration’s long history dates back to a time before photography -- as humans sought to document and categorize what a plant looked like for someone in a different location. Today, even though it may be easier to take a photo on a cell phone, botanical artists create images that reveal delicate details that photographs can not. In this course, students learn to draw plant-based material from observation. Working in colored pencils, students focus on techniques such as color blending, scumbling, and shape blocking. Also covers use of color, value, intensity, contrast, positive/negative space, and composition. No drawing experience necessary.
