“The Party” Murals by Gary Paller at Melrose Triangle

Painter and BAC teaching artist Gary Paller has been selected by Gensler, a global design and architecture firm (via the City of West Hollywood Muralist Roster) to create a temporary mural over the construction fence encircling The Melrose Triangle, a development along Santa Monica Boulevard, Almont Drive, and Melrose Avenue.

The trio of pieces “Wild Party”, "Violet Party", "Blue Party", and "Fancy Party" were created to beautify the site during construction.  Each piece of the 1000 foot+ plus mural is designed to seamlessly flow into the next.

The digitally created artworks are on display for the next three years while the mixed use Melrose Triangle is modernized to include better living, working, and retail spaces, as well as affordable housing units.

The public art component was curated by Patrick Ela, former Curator and Director of the Craft and Folk Art Museum (now known as Craft Contemporary) where he worked for 21 years. Paller and artist Andrew Haan, were selected by Gensler for the project. Ela then acted as the project liaison shepherding draft images and technical details between the artists, designers, and the construction company.

I thought the designs should be happy and celebratory, as this is an exciting, huge project for the city of West Hollywood - so colorful klieglight geometry* seemed a good way to go.
— Gary Paller

Gary created his pieces in Photoshop, and a printing company realized them on special plastic sheeting designed for durability. If they are damaged over the life of the installation they will be replaced.

Brentwood Art Center teaching artists also work in their communities to improve and beautify their surroundings, while at the same time learning new skills and ways their creativity can be realized in the world.
