Botanical and scientific illustration's long history dates back to a time before photography - as humans sought to document and categorize what a plant, insect, or animal looked like for someone in a different location. Today, even though it may be easier to take a photo, botanical and scientific illustrators create images that reveal delicate details that photographs cannot.
In this course, students learn to draw herons - large and graceful aquatic birds that hunt for fish in the shallows of bays, ponds, and rivers. Working in colored pencils, students focus on techniques such as color blending, scumbling, and shape blocking. Also covers use of color, value, saturation, contrast, positive/negative space, and composition. Must be familiar with drawing and colored pencils.
