Karen Stein

BA, Art and Education

Karen Stein is a mixed media, acrylic artist. I grew up on the East Coast receiving a BA in teaching and art. I started a home décor company that evolved into a children’s clothing manufacturing company selling to Better Department stores throughout the US and Canada. I opened a “trendy” Specialty Store Boutique in an upscale neighborhood catering to HS girls and soccer moms.

Deciding to move to LA in 1991 I again kick started my own apparel company for contemporary women and opened a retail “Lifestyle” store in Hancock Park. I started teaching clothing design and other classes at FIDM in DTLA, a few classes a week, while running my business. My goal was to inspire the creative minds of my students to develop a passion for the industry.

I started taking abstract art classes after I closed my third store in 2015. Finally I had some time to play!!!! I took workshops from known artists and applied different techniques to my own work.

I am known for my color choices, textures, markings and hidden surprises in my under layers. Layers build the history in a painting and is what drawers the viewer in. Creating and developing ideas has always been part of my personality and I am only too happy to share it all with my students.

I believe art making is as much about discovery and the creative process as it is about expression. My work has been in juried gallery shows throughout the US.
